Actiontec lousy internal network performance?

Is anyone else experiencing really lousy internal network performance with the VZ stock Actiontec router? I've had FIOS triple play for a few weeks now and am generally satisfied except for what seems to me to be severely degraded internal network performance since the FIOS install. I previously had VZ DSL with the old Westie 2200 modem >> a Buffalo wireless router. The new setup is stock VZ installation (coax) with wi-fi turned off in the AT, allowing the Buffalo to continue handling that (numerous devices MAC-filtered, didn't want to have to recode all the MAC addresses into the AT...) All DHCP is being handled by the AT, the old Buffalo is reset to access point only.

I have a fairly robust ethernet network throughout the house with several NAS boxes that maintain media and business files plus several general apps that load from the server. Ever since FIOS was installed, apparent network performance sucks. I say apparent because I don't have any way of measuring the substantive speed, just the feel of it. Network apps that used to load quickly now stall, and large file transfers that were previously finished in seconds now take minutes.

Anybody else seen this issue?

If all your devices are wireless, then the Actiontec isn't involved besides the initial IP address assignment.

If you have wired devices, you should buy a switch like the above, connect it to the Actiontec, and then connect all devices to that switch. I used such a setup for a long time and saw 40+ Megabytes per second to and from my NAS.

Thanks, Ken, not much wireless is going on at any one time, it's just there for when needed for certain devices (hence the MAC filtering), some of which only are present when the kids visit. All serious use is hard-wired, and because of the extent of that in several different parts of the house, I have several 5- and 8-port 10/100 switches that distribute to the final devices. Only these 3 switches plus the Buffalo wireless are connected to the 4 LAN ports of the Actiontec. I haven't felt a need to buy new gigabit switches because all the device interfaces (workstations and the NASes) are 10/100, so a faster switch won't make the device transmit any faster.

The reason I'm wondering about the AT is because I haven't really changed much about the overall topology with the FIOS. My old DSL used to feed the Buffalo which then fed all the switches, now the FIOS ONT feeds the AT which feeds the same switches (plus the TV STBs). But, local transfers even between devices connected to the same switch (e.g., my home office workstation and the NAS on the same 8-port switch) are visibly slower.

I had FIOS internet for a few years and recently had tv installed. They replaced my dlink with the Actiontec and I noticed that after a while I would have poor performance on my network and on speed tests. Everything seemed sluggish. If I rebooted the AT, things would get better for a while and then the same problem. I tried tweaking the AT but gave up and eventually put my dlink back in as the main router and put the AT in bridge mode to handle the cable boxes. Once I put the dlink back into the mix everything seemed to return to normal. It is possible that my problems were unrelated to the AT, but I gave up trying to diagnose the problem once my network returned to normal.

Interesting. I've noticed that too.

The effect was severe when I enabled either the parental controls or the website filtering in the Actiontec. On older firmware, the parental controls would eventually crash the router. Memory leak?

What version of firmware are you running? With 4.0.16.1.45.160 and the parental controls and web site filtering turn off, the AT is staying up, but response time does seem to degrade slowly over time (>week).

When I was running 4.0.16.1.56.0.10.7, response time was definitely slower, even though speed tests were no different.

Thanks MF, running latest firmware, no parental controls, no filtering, everything default except wireless turned off.

since u had DSL ur speeds were of course slower, so are ur computers optimized for such a faster connection? the thing is your also talking about slower speeds between networked devices so i dont see how that would affect performance if ur connection isn't optimized.

i would give optimizing your connection a shot. if ur connection isn't above 20 MBps then use TCP optimizer (usually called SG TCP Optimizer over at download.com). it automatically configures your connection once u tell it how fast your connection is. IT then puts all the necessary registry entries where they should be, ect. hay and its free

Here is what I was able to observe with the AT. It seems that for no apparent reason the AT becomes either unresponsive or horribly slow. So when something is needed like UPNP communication or a port fowarding rule the router would just hang or operate VERY slowly for no apparent reason. Other times, it would work great.

So I tried assigned everything a static IP from the AT and apparently I hit on another bug. The static IP's were not being saved...

I do have confidence in a future firmware fix from VZW, but I have no idea on the timeframe they are working with.

I also have a very similar home network setup. My solution was to dump the AT router for a DLINK DIR 655 with a NIM-100 to handle the MoCA
